UK Overseas Trade in Goods, September 2021

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) collects the UK’s international trade in goods data for Non-EU and EU trade with the UK. These are published on a monthly basis and figures for September were released on 11 November 2021.

Summary

Total exports of goods for September 2021 were £28.7 billion. This was up £4.6 billion (19%) compared with last month.

Total imports of goods for September 2021 were £45.5 billion. This was up £5.8 billion (15%) compared with last month.

The UK was a net importer this month, with imports exceeding exports by £16.8 billion.

For EU trade the UK was a net importer this month, with imports exceeding exports by £7.2 billion.

For Non-EU trade the UK was a net importer this month, with imports exceeding exports by £9.7 billion.


Exports from the UK

EU Exports for September 2021 were £13.4 billion This was an increase of £1.7 billion (15.0%) on last month.

Non-EU Exports for September 2021 were £15.2 billion. This was an increase of £2.9 billion (23%) on last month.

The USA accounted for 11.5% (£3.3bn) per cent of the total value of goods exports from the UK. Switzerland had the second largest proportion accounting for 10.2% (£2.9bn) followed by the Netherlands with 8.3% (£2.4bn), Germany with 8.0% (£2.3bn) and the Republic of Ireland with 6.4% (£1.8bn). The top five export partners accounted for 44.4% of total exports in goods in September 2021.

Imports to the UK

EU Imports for September 2021 were £20.6 billion. This was an increase of £3.5 billion (20%) on last month

Non-EU Imports for September 2021 were £24.9 billion. This was an increase of £2.3 billion (10%) on last month.

China accounted for 13.6% (£6.2bn) of the total value of imports to the UK. Germany had the second largest proportion of the total value of trade, accounting for 10.5% (£4.8bn) followed by the USA 8.2% (£3.7bn) then the Netherlands 6.5% (£3.0bn) and Norway 5.8% (£2.6bn). The top five import partner countries accounted for 44.6% of the total value of goods imported in September 2021.
