UK Overseas Trade in Goods, October 2021

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) collects the UK’s international trade in goods data for Non-EU and EU trade with the UK. These are published on a monthly basis and figures for October were released on 10 December 2021.

Summary

Total exports of goods for October 2021 were £33.8 billion. This was up £5.0 billion (18%) compared with last month.

Total imports of goods for October 2021 were £45.6 billion. This was up £0.1 billion (0.2%) compared with last month.

The UK was a net importer this month, with imports exceeding exports by £11.9 billion.

For EU trade the UK was a net importer this month, with imports exceeding exports by £5.4 billion.

For Non-EU trade the UK was a net importer this month, with imports exceeding exports by £6.5 billion.


Exports from the UK

EU Exports for October 2021 were £14.3 billion This was an increase of £0.8 billion (6.0%) on last month.

Non-EU Exports for October 2021 were £19.5 billion. This was an increase of £4.2 billion (28%) on last month.

Switzerland accounted for 13.9% (£4.7bn) of the total value of goods exports from the UK. The USA had the second largest proportion accounting for 11.7% (£4.0bn) per cent followed by the Netherlands with 8.0% (£2.7bn), Germany with 7.4% (£2.5bn) and the Republic of Ireland with 6.2% (£2.1bn). The top five export partners accounted for 47.2% of total exports in goods in October 2021.

Imports to the UK

EU Imports for October 2021 were £19.7 billion. This was an decrease of £0.9 billion (4.6%) on last month

Non-EU Imports for October 2021 were £25.9 billion. This was an increase of £1.1 billion (4.2%) on last month.

China accounted for 11.8% (£5.4bn) of the total value of imports to the UK. Germany had the second largest proportion of the total value of trade, accounting for 10.5% (£4.8bn) followed by the USA 8.3% (£3.8bn) then Norway 8.0% (£3.6bn) and the Netherlands 6.3% (£2.9bn). The top five import partner countries accounted for 44.9% of the total value of goods imported in October 2021.
