HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) collects the UK’s international trade in goods data for Non-EU and EU trade with the UK. These are published on a monthly basis and figures for January were released on 11 March 2022.

Summary
Total exports of goods for January 2022 were £25.9 billion. This was down £8.3 billion (24%) compared with last month.
Total imports of goods for January 2022 were £51.0 billion. This was up £4.1 billion (8.7%) compared with last month.
The UK was a net importer this month, with imports exceeding exports by £25.1 billion
For EU trade the UK was a net importer this month, with imports exceeding exports by £11.7 billion.
For Non-EU trade the UK was a net importer this month, with imports exceeding exports by £13.3 billion.
Exports from the UK
EU Exports for January 2022 were £11.3 billion This was an decrease of £3.4 billion (23%) on last month.
Non-EU Exports for January 2022 were £14.6 billion. This was an decrease of £4.9 billion (25%) on last month.
The USA accounted for 12.5% (£3.2bn) of the total value of goods exports from the UK. Switzerland had the second largest proportion accounting for 9.3% (£2.4bn) per cent followed by the Netherlands with 8.9% (£2.3bn), Germany with 7.3% (£1.9bn) and the Republic of Ireland with 6.6% (£1.7bn). The top five export partners accounted for 44.6% of total exports in goods in January 2022
Imports to the UK
EU Imports for January 2022 were £23.0 billion. This was an increase of £3.7 billion (19%) on last month
Non-EU Imports for January 2022 were £28.0 billion. This was an increase of £0.4 billion (1.3%) on last month.
China accounted for 10.9% (£5.6bn) of the total value of imports to the UK. The USA had the second largest proportion of the total value of trade accounting for 10.2% (£5.2bn), followed by Germany 10.1% (£5.1bn), the Netherlands 7.8% (£4.0bn) and Norway with 7.0% (£3.6bn). The top five import partner countries accounted for 46.0% of the total value of goods imported in January 2022.
