UK Overseas Trade in Goods, December 2021

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) collects the UK’s international trade in goods data for Non-EU and EU trade with the UK. These are published on a monthly basis and figures for December were released on 11 February 2022.

Summary

Total exports of goods for December 2021 were £34.2 billion. This was up £4.4 billion (15%) compared with last month.

Total imports of goods for December 2021 were £46.5 billion. This was down £2.0 billion (4.1%) compared with last month.

The UK was a net importer this month, with imports exceeding exports by £12.3 billion

For EU trade the UK was a net importer this month, with imports exceeding exports by £4.3 billion.

For Non-EU trade the UK was a net importer this month, with imports exceeding exports by £8.1 billion.


Exports from the UK

EU Exports for December 2021 were £14.6 billion This was an decrease of £0.1 billion (0.1%) on last month.

Non-EU Exports for December 2021 were £19.5 billion. This was an increase of £4.4 billion (29%) on last month.

Switzerland accounted for 13.4% (£4.6bn) of the total value of goods exports from the UK. The USA had the second largest proportion accounting for 11.0% (£3.7bn) per cent followed by the Republic of Ireland with 7.6% (£2.6bn), Germany with 7.0% (£2.4bn) and the Netherlands with 6.5% (£2.2bn). The top five export partners accounted for 45.5% of total exports in goods in December 2021.


Imports to the UK

EU Imports for December 2021 were £18.9 billion. This was an decrease of £1.9 billion (9.1%) on last month

Non-EU Imports for December 2021 were £27.6 billion. This was an decrease of £0.1 billion (0.3%) on last month.

China accounted for 11.2% (£5.2bn) of the total value of imports to the UK. Norway had the second largest proportion of the total value of trade, accounting for 10.2% (£4.7bn) followed by the USA 9.8% (£4.5bn) Germany 9.2% (£4.3bn) and the Netherlands 6.7% (£3.1bn). The top five import partner countries accounted for 47.1% of the total value of goods imported in December 2021.
