UK Overseas Trade in Goods, April 2021

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) collects the UK’s international trade in goods data for Non-EU and EU trade with the UK. These are published on a monthly basis and figures for April 2021 have recently been released (11 June 2021).

Summary

Total exports of goods for April 2021 were £28.1 billion. This was down £6.9 billion (20%) compared with last month.

Total imports of goods for April 2021 were £39.1 billion. This was down £2.8 billion (6.6%) compared with last month.

The UK was a net importer this month, with imports exceeding exports by £11.0 billion.

For EU trade the UK was a net importer this month, with imports exceeding exports by £4.1 billion.

For Non-EU trade the UK was a net importer this month, with imports exceeding exports by £6.9 billion.


Exports from the UK

EU Exports for April 2021 were £13.1 billion This was an decrease of £1.5 billion (10%) on last month.

Non-EU Exports for April 2021 were £14.9 billion. This was an decrease of £5.4 billion (27%) on last month.

The USA accounted for 13.5% (£3.8bn) per cent of the total value of goods exports from the UK. Germany had the second largest proportion accounting for 9.4% (£2.6bn) followed by the Netherlands with 6.4% (£1.8bn), the Republic of Ireland with 5.9% (£1.7bn) and Switzerland with 5.9% (£1.7bn). The top five export partners accounted for 41.1% of total exports in goods in April 2021.


Imports to the UK

EU Imports for April 2021 were £17.2 billion. This was an decrease of £3.0 billion (15%) on last month

Non-EU Imports for April 2021 were £21.9 billion. This was an increase of £0.2 billion (1.0%) on last month.

China accounted for 12.1% (£4.7bn) of the total value of imports to the UK. Germany had the second largest proportion of the total value of trade, accounting for 11.4% (£4.4bn) followed by the USA 9.2% (£3.6bn) then the Netherlands 5.4% (£2.1bn) and Belgium 4.5% (£1.8bn). The top five import partner countries accounted for 42.6% of the total value of goods imported in April 2021.
