New Prime Minister – Boris Johnson

Following the vote by members of the Conservative Party, Boris Johnson has been elected as leader of the Conservative Party and will become the next Prime Minster.

Results of the postal vote are as follows:

There are 159,230 party members.

Turnout was 87.4% with 139,167 members voting

509 ballot papers were rejected.

92,153 (66.4%) voted for Boris Johnson and

46,656 (33.6%) voted for Jeremy Hunt.

Boris Johnson is duly elected and will replace Theresa May as Prime Minister of the UK on Wednesday afternoon (24 July).


Theresa May will hold her final Prime Minister Questions on 24 July 2019 before proceeding to see the Queen to resign her position.

After that, Boris Johnson will go to Buckingham Palace where he will be invited to form a Government.
